Channa gachua, commonly known as the Bengal Snakehead or Dwarf Snakehead, is one of the most widely distributed channa species, found across South and Southeast Asia from India to Indonesia. It is a long-standing favorite among hobbyists for its hardiness, manageable size and attractive mottled brown, olive and copper patterning, which can show hints of blue or orange on the fins depending on locality and mood.

This species is tougher and more adaptable than many channa, tolerating a wider range of water conditions and temperatures, which makes it a good choice for keepers moving beyond beginner predator species. It retains the trademark channa intelligence and personality, often recognizing its keeper and becoming noticeably active at feeding time.

As an obligate air-breather, it needs regular access to the surface, and as a capable jumper, it absolutely requires a tight-fitting lid. Decorate the tank with driftwood, plants and hiding spots to give this territorial predator a sense of security.

Care Highlights:

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20-30 gallons for a single adult
  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 20-28°C
  • Diet: Live or frozen bloodworms, earthworms, small fish, shrimp, carnivore pellets
  • Temperament: Predatory and territorial; best kept alone
  • Special Needs: Tight-fitting lid, surface air access, hiding places

A great choice for hobbyists wanting a hardy, characterful, classic channa species that's a little more forgiving than its rarer cousins.
