Badis assamensis, commonly known as the Assam Badis, is a small, striking freshwater fish endemic to the slow-moving streams and pools of Assam, India. Belonging to the Badidae family, this species is closely related to the popular Badis badis but is distinguished by its unique colouration and slightly more elongated body shape.

Males display a mesmerizing ability to shift colours—from soft blues and greens to deep reds and browns—depending on mood, environment, and social interactions, making them a favourite among nano fish enthusiasts. Females are comparatively duller but still carry an understated charm.

This species thrives best in a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, rocks, and dense vegetation, mimicking its natural habitat. Being a shy and slow-feeding fish, it is best kept with peaceful, similarly-sized tankmates or in a dedicated species-only setup. Badis assamensis is carnivorous by nature and prefers live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia, though some specimens may accept high-quality micro pellets over time.

Ideal water parameters include a temperature range of 22–26°C, pH between 6.5–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. A minimum tank size of 10–15 gallons is recommended for a small group, with gentle filtration to avoid strong currents.
